Lake Wawasee Origins
Located in north eastern Kosciusko County, the region carries a diverse and colorful history. Initially settled by Native American Indians, the lake was named for a chief of the Miami tribe. In 1826 the initial white settlers found their way to what would later be known as the town of Syracuse. Today this local community of less than 3,000 residents (2010) resides along the western most shore of Syracuse Lake extending to the northwest shores of Lake Wawasee. With acres of public parks, museums, a planetarium, fine dining, and antique shops, Syracuse has a wonderful sense of community and is a great complement to Lake Wawasee.
Focus on Conservation
Currently 90 percent of Lake Wawasee’s twenty five mile shoreline has been developed. Because of this fact, great care is currently being taken to protect the wildlife habitat where hawks, herons, and eagles call home. Over 240 acres of wetland located on the lakes north east shores are being protected with “no wake” ordinances to help facilitate this conservation effort. In 1951 the Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Areawas established in order to assist in protecting the 3300+ acres of the watershed from any further development. The combined efforts of several state agencies, local organizations, and the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation have resulted in a level of water quality superb for fishing and lakeside habitation.
A fishery survey conducted in 2005 collected 28 different types of fish. During the examination researchers discovered the most abundant species were largemouth bass, northern pike, bluegills, yellow bullhead, redear sunfish, crappies, and yellow perch. For those sportsmen who enjoy fishing competitively, a large number of bass fishing tournaments are held throughout the year. A variety of tackle shops, boat marina and repair shops, and boat rental facilities are available to meet all of your fishing needs. Public access to the lake is provided from the town of Syracuse at Lakeside Park and Henry Ward Park. Other boat ramps can be found along the shoreline.

For those people who prefer smoother sailing, local yacht clubs will be happy to accommodate you. An area referred to as the “sand bar” is a shallow section of the lake where crafts can anchor and people can swim in 3 to 4 feet of water. The Wawasee Family Fishing Area is a park overseen by the state which provides a recreational plot of more than 10 ADA accessible acres for families to enjoy. End your week peacefully on Sunday by relaxing and attending one of many boat-in church worship services.
